Is an animal’s life more important than a human’s?

Pets can establish a special bound with people and become the closest living relatives of human beings, leaving animal lovers to go at any length to rescue a pet’s life in danger. But sometimes, trying to rescue a stray animal from a potential traffic accident may cause traffic chaos and even put other people’s life in danger。

I have first-hand experience as I witnessed a driver who got out of her car in morning rush hour, trying to save the life of my dog Chloe. Her actions—while heroic-- blocked traffic, nearly causing another traffic accident as several drivers nearly rear-ended her.

On a bright and sunny morning, I walked Chloe, my 90-pound dog in the neighbourhood. When we approached the intersection of a busy street, a small bunny from a nearby park jumped out of a hedge.  Chloe spotted it and immediately chased after it -- right into a bustling avenue, as I wasn’t able to hold her tremendous power back.

Cars and buses were rushing by as I helplessly watched Chloe run headlong into heavy traffic. Scenes of Chloe being killed flooded into my mind. Suddenly, I heard a loud bang, followed by screeching tires and flurry of car horns. I thought that was it.

Horrified, with traffic at a standstill, I ran across the street. To my surprise, I found Chloe was still alive. She looked perfectly fine, meandering on all fours around the car that had just hit her. But more shockingly, I saw a woman quickly jump out of the car. She ran over to me, with tears running down her face.

“I’m terribly, terribly sorry… I’ve never, ever hit an animal before!” The woman apologized profusely, completely ignoring the fact that we were in the middle of the street and blocking traffic. She kept repeating her apologies until a driver behind her slammed on the horn.

I was left speechless. Shouldn’t I be the one who should apologize? Also, why would she stop her car and created such a mess, knowing that the dog wasn’t hurt badly?

But this woman represents a North American demographic who would go leaps and bounds, trying to save a potentially endangered life -- at any costs, including the legal consequences and sometimes, human lives.

In 2013, a Florida man who stopped to try and save a cat on a busy highway caused a crash that killed 75-year-old woman. As it turns out, both the woman and the cat were killed.

According to a media report, in the afternoon rush hour of a Monday in 2013,  a 35 year old man was on his way through Deerfield Beach when he spotted a cowering cat on the road and pulled over his Toyota Tundra to help. A 75-year-old woman driving a Honda Accord couldn’t stop, rear-ending the Tundra.

According to witnesses, the Accord first struck the man, and then rear-ended the Tundra. The accident claimed both the lives of the woman and the cat. The man was left in critical condition.

I wonder if that woman in Chloe’s incident was aware of the risks caused by her actions. Tear and apologies can’t save a human’s life.
