Amidst Delete Facebook Campaign, I see hope to get rid of my cyberstalkers

“Early signs of stomach cancer.”

“Tips on how to survive late stage stomach cancer.”

The articles accompanied with graphic images of stomach cancer appeared on my iPad device the day after my stomach ultrasound test, as I was anxiously waiting for my test results. I was freaked out by what I saw but couldn’t resist the urge to click on them. Different types of ads were inserted into the articles, from over-the-counter medications to acupuncture clinics.

The truth was that my online activities – from booking the test through my cellphone to searching the clinic through Google Map – have been monitored and tracked, leaving me to fall victim to the infamous online data collection operation that has exploited and abused users’ privacy.

Needless to say, it wasn’t the first time that I was being followed by digital stalkers and that I wasn’t the only victim. The mass operation across all digital platforms has put everyone with an online life in its crosshair. In my 2015 article “Companies Improve Their Bottom Line at the Expenses of Consumers’ Privacy”, I vented about my frustrations over a KitchenAid fiasco, which resonated with the anger from a sleep apnea patient who had been followed by CPAP machine ads wherever he visited online.

But the voice of a few disgruntled whiners has not even made a dent in the creepy corporate practices. Over the years, the digital giants have grown in unprecedent scales and sizes, aggressively and shamelessly ripping away users’ privacy even inside their homes.  The governments have been mostly ignorant about its harms caused to users and citizens – such as creating fear in my case, and the mass data surveillance operation has increasingly become an online norm.

But when its operation extends to the political arena, it has finally touched the nerves of the political powerful and government authorities, and that is when the privacy scandals have landed these digital giants in hot water. A data analysis firm Cambridge Analytica harvested data from 87 million Facebook users – including over 620,000 Canadians--without their consent, trying to influence a variety of political events – from Donald Trump 2016 election campaign to the Brexit referendum in 2016. The firm’s Canadian counterpart even planned to acquire internet-browsing histories from citizens of a Caribbean country, and also tried to expand its influence in Canadian politics through its ties with the Liberal government.

Yes, they could ignore the voices from individual like me, but they couldn’t ignore the US Congress, the British Parliament, or the Canadian regulators. As Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is asked to testify in US Congress and is investigated by UK newspapers and Canadian Privacy authorities, it has created a reckoning moment for the industries that have faced growing global scrutiny for turning mass users into products of merchants and digital platforms into anti-democratic weapons.

As public outrage grows, a Delete Facebook Campaign has also offered me with a hope that my iPad will never become a tool for online stalkers and phycological abusers.
