Councillor Li, no excuse to bully those who wear masks

Politicians have to mince their words and think carefully before opening their mouths. On many occasions, the public expects not only logic but also compassion and political correctness all at the same time. Failure to meet some or all of those requirements can result in a backlash for them. It will plague them immediately and may also affect their prospects for re-elections.

York Regional Councillor Mr. Joe Li is a prime example of the above. His recent commands on the wearing of masks drew the wrath of many residents. Hiding behind “Health Canada's Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) #10”, Joe claimed that he is only following the guidelines like any other politicians.

Details of the FAQ referenced above:

10. Should the general population in Canada wear masks to protect themselves from COVID-19?

If you are a healthy individual, the use of a mask is not necessary.

However, if you are experiencing symptoms of an illness that spreads through the air, wearing a mask can help prevent the spread of the infection to others. The mask acts as a barrier and helps stop the tiny droplets from spreading around you when you cough or sneeze. Your health provider may recommend you to wear a mask while you are seeking or waiting for care. In this instance, masks are an appropriate part of infection prevention and control measures that are put in place so that people with an infectious respiratory illness do not transmit the infection to others.

If you are caring for a sick person or you are in direct contact with an ill person, wearing a mask can help protect you from catching COVID-19, but it will not fully eliminate the risk of illness.

When we look at the paragraphs above, the key (first) statement uses the words “not necessary”. This really means that you can use your own discretion when it comes to the wearing of masks. Otherwise, stronger words like “not recommended” or “should be curtailed” would have been used.

On February 22, 2020, Mr. Li attended an event held at the Scarborough Woodside Square to promote corona-virus prevention and revival of the Chinese restaurant businesses. In that meeting, he apparently pointed to a masked lady and said “If you are not sick, please do not wear a mask”. The masked lady did not comply with his request. Later on, when Mr. Li found out that she was a (sick) volunteer working at the event, he approached the organization hosting the event and reminded them that if volunteers are sick, they should be staying home and not going to work. There is no evidence to suggest that Mr. Li apologized to the volunteer for his rude behaviour.

At the same event, Mr. Li also mentioned that his wife is the owner of a restaurant. When a delivery person showed up wearing a mask one time, he was told not to do it again or he will not be allowed onto the premises. Mr. Li clarified that his wife's restaurant would take action to talk to masked customers. If they admit to respiratory illnesses. They would be requested to seek patronage elsewhere.

All of these comments from Mr. Li triggered a movement to demand that he stops bullying those who wear masks. An on-line petition started in social media and quickly gathered steam. Netizens are not arguing about whether someone should or should not wear a mask. They are saying that everyone should have right to wear a mask if they want to. Over 5200 “signed” this petition. Another petition also requested an apology from Mr. Li on this bullying matter and reached over 1200 participants in a few short days.

Mr. Li was not apologetic, he deflected the attention in a recent radio talk show and tried to reach out to patriotic Chinese mainlanders for support, stating that he knew who is behind all this – the same people who are the organizers of the motion to ban foreign flag raisings in Markham last month.

Mr. Li made two mistakes here: First, no evidence suggests that the petition initiator has anything to do with the petitions. Second, a large majority of people wearing masks around Markham are patriotic young Chinese mainlanders who are also suffering from his bullying!

US President Franklin Roosevelt once said: “There is nothing to fear but FEAR itself”. Mr. Li is fearing that masked people are creating fear through mask wearing. Instead, he is feared of an imaginary FEAR created by himself!

In the aforementioned talk show, Mr. Li grudgingly suggested that his inability to properly articulate himself may have caused the uproar. Listeners are unlikely to buy into this excuse. The long, hard days are still to come for Mr. Li's careless statements on the wearing of face masks.
