Chinese racism sparks backlash against blacks
(Nancy Jin)

Enraged African Americans stormed streets to protest against police brutality, sparking a new wave of Black Lives Matter movements across the globe. But some anti-black racists in the Chinese community seem uncomfortable with the black people’s demand for change. They condemn the action as violent and chaotic and label it as a revival of the Cultural Revolution – which wreaked havoc on Chinese society and caused decades of setbacks for the nation. However, portraying blacks’ civil rights movement as a deadly destructive force exposes a callous attitude towards the black oppression in the US, underscoring prevailing anti-black racism in the Chinese community.

The black community has suffered a 400-year history of racial discrimination and abuse in the US. In the 1600s, white men organized slave patrols to brutally suppress rebellions amidst fears of black slaves rising against their white owners. While the practice ended in 1895 with the passing of the 13th Amendment, African Americans remained the target of police brutality and faced restrictions on property ownership, employment, and other matters. Historically, the community was under the terrorist attacks from white supremacists and other hate groups, with police officers assisting their atrocious crimes against blacks. During the civil rights era, police suppressed blacks’ peaceful activists with violence, including the use of dogs and fire hoses. The US government was also the accomplice of the systemic racism against the race, launching the war on drugs to target the black community and passing gun control laws to charge more blacks as firearm offenders.

Despite the oppression, resilient black people have never silently put up with the injustice or cease to fight for racial equality and fairness in the US. In 1955, the Montgomery bus boycott, a protest campaign by African American woman Rosa Parks, led to the abolishment of state law that required African Americans to surrender their seats to white people on a bus. But Parks was only one of the hundreds of thousands of black men and women who have fought against racial oppression in US history. In 2014, after the police shooting of Michael Brown, more than five hundred members joined the Ferguson Missouri protest, marking the first in-person national protest under the Black’s Lives Matter movement. Since then, thousands of protests and demonstrations erupted across hundreds of US cities, with the activism more powerful and robust than ever. George Floyd, who tragically died after the white police officer brutally kneeling on his neck for almost nine minutes, brought blacks’ anger and rage to a tipping point, which empowered African Americans to take their efforts to end racism to a new high.

However, the Black Lives Matter movement, despite its overwhelming support, seems to have elicited less compassion and empathy from other minority races in North America – including the Chinese. These non-black minorities ignore the pain and suffering the black community faces and cannot tolerate blacks’ desire for racial equality and change. They cast a racist view on the protest and even advocate white supremacy. They also believe that black people themselves are the cause of social injustice imposed on them so that they deserve to endure the pain, hardship, and racial oppression.

The Black Lives Matter movement has an immensely positive impact on society. It has helped reshape public opinions towards systemic racism, pushed to end the police brutality, and steered the country towards a racially equal society –not only for African Americans but also for Asians and other visible minorities. However, growing anti-black racism will inevitably spark the backlash against BLM that disregards its contributions and denounces it as dark as the Cultural Revolution. Without confronting their anti-black racism, these non-black minorities will never be able to join their black counterparts to fight racial injustice existing in the white-dominated countries.
