Two years ago, my 27-year-old son, an Ivey Business School graduate who worked as a senior manager at RBI, quit his job to start his own business with a partner. As a second generation of an immigrant family, he has entrepreneurship in his blood, dreaming of building his own business at an early age. But his decision left me in shock. The entrepreneurship journey is fraught with headwinds and stormy days rather than rainbows and sunshine. To give up a promising career that offered a corporate ladder and a steady paycheck for the challenges of building a clientele from scratch seemed unrealistic. Is he ready to take the financial and emotional plunge?

90% of startups in Canada – from food delivery apps to business matchmaking services fail within the first year, and around 50% fail to keep the lights on before it reaches the fifth year. Besides technical, financial, legal, and managerial hurdles, Canada’s current economic and business environment presents more stumbling blocks for startups. Corporate concentration has seen industries increasingly controlled by a few powerful companies. The thriving oligopolies have created significant barriers for new firms to enter the industry, resulting in the decline of Canadian entrepreneurship since the 1980s. High inflation and soaring cost of capital are additional barriers. A record high rate since 2009 -- of 45% of business owners have struggled with borrowing costs, which saw credit card debt increase by 15% over last year while the line of credit by 11 percent. Meanwhile, entrepreneurs are increasingly frustrated over Canadian banks’ tightening lending conditions, with loan approval rates for small and medium-sized enterprises reaching a low of 12%, far below the OECD average of 44 percent.

My son’s business –Quoted Tech Gaming Computers (a gaming computer producer)—was up and running when entrepreneurship was losing momentum in Canada. The rising cost of living, the risk and uncertainty of starting a company, and the pandemic upheaval over the years have killed the entrepreneur dreams of young Canadians, holding many back from taking on the business venture. The advantages of stable employment -- from job security to hefty paycheques to a much less stressful lifestyle -- make the risky business endeavor less desirable. Canada’s rapidly expanding public sector has lured away those planning for self-employment in droves. From 2003 to 2013, employment in Canada’s public sector increased by 22.6 percent, more than double the rate of increase in the private sector (10.7 percent), and all levels of government have added more workers since 2020. Meanwhile, the rising wages from private employers, amid soaring labor shortages and high inflation, have drawn many workers with a dream to venture out, particularly in the tech sector. As a result, fewer young Canadians have taken on business ownership, with just 38 percent of small and medium-sized entrepreneurs under 50 years old today, compared with 53 percent in 2004.

Despite the risks and challenges, those with a heart and soul in entrepreneurship are bucking the trend, boldly embarking on a journey that could be ultimately rewarding. A successful business not only leads to wealth and opportunity growth but also creates employment for the job market and plays a vital role in Canada’s economic growth. My son’s company, now in its second year, has employed three employees and enjoyed revenue growth. The courageous pursuit of his dream without fear of failure has earned my respect.
