The release of treated radioactive wastewater from Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant into the Pacific has sparked protests and emotional reactions from its neighboring countries. The Chinese government has attacked Japan’s wastewater discharge and banned the import of all aquatic products from Japan, despite Japan’s repeated assertion that the release is safe and won’t pose health risks to humans or the environment. Beijing’s propaganda campaign has fueled public fear over the danger of nuclear waste, as angry posts against Japan soared on social media while panic buying for salt – perceived to offer radiation protection -- swept through multiple cities in China.

Tritium, a radioactive substance contained in a million tons of wastewater in Japan’s discharge plan, was the focus of controversy. The radioactive material remains in the cooling water while circulating through the overheated fuel rods, even though the treatment removes most other contaminants. TEPCO, the Japanese power company, stated that the first batch release of the diluted water would contain about 190 becquerels of tritium per liter —significantly below the World Health Organization's limit of 10,000 becquerels per liter for drinking water.

The IAEA's safety review approved the TEPCO’s discharge, stating it would have a “negligible” radiological effect on humans or the environment. However, critics remain skeptical, highlighting a potential lack of long-term data to cast doubt over TEPCO’s release.

The nuclear industry has grappled with controversies over nuclear wastewater for decades, driven by a widespread perception of its potential harm. As fears over nuclear waste management grip China, a parallel episode also unfolds in the Western country of Canada, involving indigenous communities and the nuclear authority.

Ottawa’s recent nuclear waste dump plan raised alarm bells with Quebec First Nations over its contamination of drinking water, identifying tritium as the primary culprit. The First Nations chief has urged Canada’s nuclear authority to reconsider setting up the wastewater storage facility at the Chalk River site, just over one kilometer from the Ottawa River. “We are concerned for all nations and life living off the Ottawa River‘s drinking water”, said Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg council, the community's governing body. “Diluting nuclear waste in a small body of water does not make sense.”

Canada’s nuclear safety authority is confident in the safety of its wastewater release plan. The environmental protection group assessment concluded that tritium in the discharged water “will pose no threat to the health of either human or aquatic species.” The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission has reassured that the tritium levels found in the municipal drinking water of these communities are well below national and international standards of 7,000 Bq/L and even below the far more restrictive 20 Bq/L limit proposed by the Ontario Drinking Water Advisory Council (ODWAC).

Nuclear power plants globally have consistently discharged tritium-laden water at levels higher than Fukushima for over 60 years without adverse effects. Similarly, countries like China have been releasing diluted tritium into the sea for decades without incident. Recognizing the compelling scientific evidence is crucial in alleviating unfounded public concerns. Undoubtedly, self-interest-oriented actions, including exploiting public fears for political gains, could have unintended consequences.
