Opinion: Rising Hate Crimes: A Reflection of 'Good-Evil' Binary Thinking

There has been an alarming surge in hate crimes across Western countries recently, a phenomenon deeply rooted in what can be termed as 'good-evil' binary thinking. This oversimplified worldview, categorizing entire groups as either wholly good or evil, ignites and fuels discriminatory acts and hate crimes.

The increase in antisemitism amidst the Hamas Israeli war has underscored the significant and concerning trend. The American Anti-Defamation League reported a staggering 312 cases of antisemitic harassment, vandalism, and assault in America alone.Europe witnessed demonstrations calling for Israel’s eradication, Jewish apartment buildings daubed with Stars of David, and bomb threats to Jewish stores. Concerned about their safety, many in the Jewish community in Canada say they are considering moving their family to Israe. This pattern reflects a knee-jerk reaction where people associate all Jewish individuals with the actions of the Israeli government, disregarding the diversity of opinions and beliefs within the community.

But this binary thinking doesn't stop with the Jewish community. Muslims, too, have been victimized in the wake of international terrorism. Post 9/11, the rise in Islamophobia was palpable, leading to a significant increase in anti-Muslim hate crimes. More recently, after the Hamas attack that tragically killed over 1300 Israelis, some individuals in Western countries misdirected their anger towards the broader Muslim community. Incidents like the assault of an Egyptian teenager in New York and hate crime charges against a man in Chicago for threatening two Muslim men highlight the severe consequences of such misplaced anger.

The Asian community has also faced the brunt of this binary mindset, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Former President Trump's reference to the "China virus" fueled a surge in anti-Asian sentiment. In New York, a 67-year-old Chinese woman died after being brutally attacked, and in Atlanta, Georgia, a shooting spree resulted in eight deaths, six of whom were of Asian descent.

These incidents illustrate how the 'good-evil matrix' leads to unfair generalizations and violence against individuals based on their race or ethnicity. Numerous Jewish individuals disagree with Netanyahu's policies, the vast majority of Muslims advocate for peace, and Asians are not more likely to transmit COVID-19 than others. Yet, the simplification of complex issues into binary good versus evil continues to provoke unwarranted hate crimes.

As we observe the reverberations of global war in our local communities, it's imperative to challenge the 'good-evil' binary thinking. Acknowledging the complexity of human behavior and societal dynamics is critical in combating the stereotypes and biases that underlie hate crimes. It's only through such understanding and resistance to oversimplification that we can hope to foster a more inclusive and tolerant society.
