Americans do American things, a wallet with $2,500 is returned

In the iconic show "Friends", an American sitcom, one of script lines says, "Finders Keepers, losers weepers". It’s definition means a person can keep what he or she has found and does not need to give it back to the person who has lost it.  Contrary to the iconic line, Chinese kids have been singing a song of their own since childhood. The lyrics of this Chinese song says "I picked up a penny on the side of the road, I handed it over to the police…" however, Ms. Ma (Ms. Ma does not what her first name in this story), a Chinese-Canadian who lives in Toronto had witnessed how kind these Americans are when she traveled in the United States of America.

On August 28, 2018, Ms. Ma and other enthusiastic Toronto Chinese-Canadians drove to south of the boarder. They planned to drive cross US in 30 days with their first stop being Indiana.

The temperature in Toronto was 32 degrees Celsius when they headed down south. After hours of driving in such hot weather, they were exhausted. They decided to stop in a roadside mall for a break after crossing the border. During the break, they were wondering around American malls, filling their gas, grabbing a bite to eat, and of course, the iconic tradition of shopping.

Ms. Ma has planned this long-distance trip for a while. She was also visiting the stores in the mall one after another. When she was about to pay for a souvenir, to her dismay she found that her wallet had gone missing. There were 15 cards in the wallet, including credit cards, bank cards, fitness club card, plus $2,530 US dollars and $180 Canadian dollars in cash. Ms. Ma was in panic, and ran back to the stores she visited immediately. Unfortunately, no one had seen her wallet.

The loss of her wallet made Ms. Ma extremely frustrated, especially considering how it was the first day of her well-planned 30 days trip to the US. "My wallet was lost in the afternoon. I visited many stores before I found out my wallet was gone. I had no idea where I dropped it." She told Chinese News.

The fellow riders however were very helpful. They lent Ms. Ma money, so she could continue the trip. Convinced that her wallet would never be returned, she did the normal procedure of making calls to cancel the cards in the missing wallet in the evening.

Time flew by, and suddenly October 3 had approached, and Ms. Ma returned to Toronto after a long venturous journey. When she got home, she had a voicemail waiting for her. It was left by a staff member from Costco. The message said that a McDonald customer saw her wallet and handed it to the duty manager.

Ms. Ma could not hide her appreciation to those who returned her wallet during the interview with Chinese News. "They took great effort to locate me after they saw an expired Costco membership card in my wallet." Ms. Ma says.

Ms. Ma contacted Costco immediately. She was told that a customer spotted the wallet when they were eating at McDonalds. The staff at McDonald found her phone through Costco's member service center.

"They are very careful in finding me because my membership card has expired. They called my home to verify if I am the one who lost the wallet."

Connecting by video conference, McDonald's staffs found out that Ms. Ma was indeed the owner of the wallet. They showed Ms. Ma everything in her wallet. Seeing that everything was still there as she left it, leaving Ms. Ma speechless. She immediately offered the staffs $1,500 US dollars as reward.

McDonald's staffs were appreciative but turn down the reward. Instead, they spent over $40 US to send the wallet back by courier.

A staff from McDonalds sent a text message to Ms. Ma. “I am very happy that we can find the owner of the wallet and return it, I wish you good luck! Remember that there are always good people in this world.” The text message reads.

Ms. Ma received the wallet along with a letter, written by Yesnena Van, one of the staff. The letter reads:

Dear Ms. Ma,

I am writing this letter because a am very happy that you were able to get in contact with me. I was praying that someway, some how you would be able to get your money. I am very glad that I found it because anyone would have just taken it. I am very honest person and I wish the rest of this world would be more like me.

All I can do is be the best person I can be.

I did not want to take any reword, because All I did was the right thing, and that's all that matter to me. I hope that you will never forget that there are good people in this world. We just have to start with ourselves, and pass it on to the next Person, in hopes of making this a better world.
