油价冲破2刀 驾车族叫苦连天 油公司股价攀升 (观点、中英对照)

Opinion: Motorists' pain is gas companies' gain

"Two dollars a liter this summer is in fact, the new normal," said the Dan McTeague, Canadians for Affordable Energy President on gas prices. Mr. McTeague has frequently provided insights over soaring gas costs as the price at the pumps continue to break the record over the decade. Gas prices, which significantly impact consumers' living expenses, weigh heavily on their psychology, leaving them feeling intense pain as prices soar. Mr.McTeague, who earned the nickname gas man, often hits out at oil companies’ corporate greed that harms consumer interest.

In an interview with Chinese in Oct. 2008, Mr. McTeague explained the record high price of $1.45 per liter in Toronto. The oil price – which accounted for 70% of per liter of gasoline cost – soared to its peak at $159/barrel in June of that year, and the gasoline prices were a clear and simultaneous reflection of the crude hikes.

But when the ensuing shrinking demand and worries about the recession slashed the oil prices to $60/barrel, the price at the pumps remained stubbornly high at above $1/liter. "Gas prices rise like a rocket but fall as a feather," frustrated Canadian drivers vented. Mr. McTeague pointed out that the uncompetitiveness of the Canadian oil industry and the oil companies' corporate greed were partly to blame for the "crack spread" – the disconnection between the crude and gasoline prices.

According to McTeague, the Canadian oil companies took advantage of the declining crude prices to grow their business margin, exploiting consumers.

"While the gas pump in the US is about 10cents per gallon (3.4 cents per liter) above the wholesale gasoline price, which is a reasonable profit margin, the Canadian oil companies were adding an average of more than 11cents per liter in recent weeks over NYMEX, which is nonsense," said McTeague. "Why did their gas stations raise the retail margin from 5 cents per liter in May to 6.5 cents today, and why did they add another 7cents per liter to the premium gas that makes up a quarter of their total sales?"

Motorists feel more acute pain this year as gas prices soared past $2 a liter. While the prices did drop as low as $1.64.9 per liter earlier this month, the relief at pumps was short-lived. Crack spread emerged again as gas prices continued to rise while oil prices leveled off. The Russian invasion of Ukraine sent the crude price to $166/barrel in Mar., but it dropped to $126 in Mid April over concerns of the recession. Meanwhile, the gasoline prices have remained at their peak level after climbing in sync with the crude.

 "After rising 4 cents a liter and despite oil declining to $112 a barrel, gas prices will fall only 3 cents/l on Sunday to $198.9", Mr. McTeague twitted on May 22.

This year, the sustained shockingly high gas prices hit Consumers much harder than the 2008' s run-up when motorists could carry on after making a few grumbles. Market analysts indicate the skyrocketing prices left some to cut back on driving while forcing others to abandon the road altogether. Meanwhile, oil companies that profited from the crack spread saw their share prices soaring at stock exchanges-- with the S&P 500 refining and marketing index up 43 percent this year.

Gas companies should feel drivers' pain and pass on the drop in wholesale gasoline prices to consumers, and McTeague always takes a swine at those that bring in the increased profit margins. "One has to consider they are pocketing the money, and there is no other way to describe it," said McTeague.
