Opinion: The NDP is not doing its work as Liberals drag their feet on the public inquiry

The Liberals, backed by a supply and confidence deal with the NDP, have ignored the parliament vote calling for an inquiry that could get to the bottom of Chinese influence. Despite its claim of opening to a public inquiry, Canada's governing party has shown repeated efforts to delay, deflect and distract, causing skepticism over its willingness to set up the legal process and its ability to protect Canadian democracy. NDP, which claims to support a fact-based, independent investigation while continuing to prop up the deal with the Liberals, will find itself in hot water if Ottawa drag its feet on foreign influence.

NDP estimated that the affordability crisis grappling low-income and the moderate-income Canadians were issues trumping foreign influence in the elections and that addressing more urgent concerns threatening the wellbeing of Canadians – such as dental care and pharma care -- can lead to political payoffs. The opinion polls seem to support NDP’s calculations, showing the foreign-interference issue is of interest but not more so than the economy, health care, and the environment.

Uyghur rights activist Mehmet Tohti said he received numerous menacing calls telling him that some of his family members died and others disappeared, sending him a chilling message that his family paid a heavy price for his advocacy. Dan Hao, a vocal protester of the CCP that forcibly took over his securities firm, said he had received threatening phone calls, had his family members in China visited by police, and his activities in Canada under the surveillance of Chinese agents. Canadian political leaders Michael Chong, Jenny Kwan, and Erin O’Toole were also the targets of China's intimidation.

They are frustrated that Canada has become an easy target of Beijing’s interference and that Ottawa has ignored their alarm bells for years, burying its head in the sand while Beijing expanded its transnational repression operations. They demand the government’s immediate action, hoping that NDP will sever the deal that makes the Liberals able to ignore the parliament’s urgent request to counter China’s emboldened actions head on.
