Opinion (Chinese-Englis) Remembering Canada’s Peak—and the Leader Who Can Bring It Back

Not long ago, I was leaning toward voting Conservative. After nearly a decade under Justin Trudeau’s leadership, I felt Canada’s economy had drifted, untethered from the strength and stability it once knew. But the return of Donald Trump’s tariffs—and the storm they’re stirring for Canada—has changed my mind. Today, I’m placing my hope in a different kind of leader: Mark Carney.

Canada is facing another economic crisis, and the moment demands steady, capable leadership. That realization has pushed me to look back—back to the era when this country stood tall economically, globally, and politically. It was a time of strong GDP growth, a Canadian dollar trading at par with the U.S. greenback, and inflation so low it barely made headlines. That “golden era” of the early 2000s was shaped in part by one of the most talented public servants Canada has ever had—Mark Carney.

Though Carney became Governor of the Bank of Canada in 2008, just as the global financial crisis erupted, he had already helped shape Canada’s economic strategy while serving at the Department of Finance. Once at the helm of the Bank, he acted swiftly, slashing interest rates to keep credit flowing and restore confidence. His actions not only stabilized Canada’s economy but made it a model of resilience. While other countries were reeling, Canada avoided a banking collapse, kept inflation under control, and maintained solid growth. Cutting interest rates was critical—by making borrowing cheaper, it helped businesses stay afloat, preserved jobs, and supported recovery.

My appreciation for that era is personal. I was one of the lucky ones who worked at Nortel, Canada’s crown jewel in the global tech sector during the late 1990s. It was a thrilling time. Like many former employees interviewed recently by The Globe and Mail, I remember the energy, the optimism, the sense that we were not just part of a company but a national mission. Our products were cutting-edge, our stock soared, and our campuses buzzed with innovation. Nortel’s success was symbolic of Canada’s broader economic ascent. And even after Nortel’s fall, Canada’s economy held strong for years—despite being hit by the 2008 global financial crisis. That resilience was thanks in large part to disciplined fiscal policy and the steady monetary leadership of Mark Carney, who helped Canada avoid the worst of the global fallout.Carney left behind a legacy of vision and leadership that helped guide the country through the crisis.

Today, that sense of confidence has faded. Trudeau’s long tenure, while progressive in many areas, has left Canada weakened on the global stage. Unemployment is rising, our currency is falling, and GDP growth now ranks among the lowest in the G7.

As Trump’s tariffs take a toll, Canada needs more than promises and political slogans. We need a leader with global credibility, sound economic instincts, and a proven track record of crisis management. Mark Carney seems like the better candidate. He has already guided this country through a global storm—and he can do it again, pulling Canada back from the brink and helping restore its past glory.

That’s why I’m switching my vote to Carney. Not out of partisanship, but because Carney represents the kind of leadership Canada desperately needs right now.
