Last week the Canada China Tibetan Culture Week (CCTCW) made its wayto Toronto. The event provoked an uproar from the Canadian-Tibetan community.
Members of the community gathered in front of the TIFF Bell Light Box to protest against the CCTCW during the film screening of ‘Roof of the World’.
The protest received little public response as moviegoers shuffled in and out of the building.
Arkan Zakharov
Photographer Arkan Zakharov, 29, said that most people do not know about the history and current state of affairs between Tibet and the Chinese government.
“They will go watch (the film) to be a part of the event,” said Zakharov.
He too admitted to not being familiar enough with the situation abroad.
The current situation abroad is this: A Tibetan monk was charged in October with inciting Tibetans to oppose Chinese rule. Hewassentenced 12 years in jail, according to Radio Free Asia. As well aseight Tibetans in China’s Sichuanallegedly aided in the self-immolation protest of a father of two – which means up to five years in jail.
According to Students for A Free Tibet Canada, over 130 Tibetans have chosen self-immolation as their means of protest against the “state-sponsored cultural genocide” going on in Tibet.
China Central Television’s coverage of the CCTCW described it as a “two-week event aimed at giving Canadians a real insight into Tibet.”
UrgyenBadheytsang, the national director for Students for a Free Tibet Canada said that the event is an act of oppression against the Tibetan people.
“There’s nothing glorious about the situation going on in Tibet,” he said.
Badheytsang
Badheytsangshouted to the crowd of protesters, “Say no to?”
They replied, “China’s show!”
Sungjang Rinpoche, a board member at Students for a Free Tibet Canada explained on how China cannot represent Tibet on an international stage.
“Imagine being a Tibetan knowing your people are being hurt, killed and repressed and then having that government come here and show you that Tibetan’s are happy,” said Badheytsang.
The Chinese Communist Party has held the stance of wanting to keep Tibet under Chinese control for decades while Tibet wants increased sovereignty and cultural autonomy. The CCTCW eliminates the chance for Torontonians to recognize the true situation abroad. It presents Toronto with misleading film and dance performances.
Rinpoche said that people are aware of the reality of the situation in Tibet. He said that by bringing the CCTCW to Toronto, the Chinese government is trying to “clean their hands.”
“The Chinese government works by trying to legitimize themselves through getting into schools, businesses, TIFF…” said Badheytsang.
“We can’t allow that as Canadians - we believe in freedom and in democracy.”
Zakharov said that the CCTCW is a “simple P.R. move to make China look good.”
Badheytsang found out about the CCTCW through reading the Toronto Star – one of the media partner’s for the event.
It was the second time it has traveled to Canada. The last time was back in 2002. Both times the event has been brought under the direction of the Chinese government.
The CCTCW kick started in Vancouver on the Nov. 2 before reaching Toronto on the Tuesday. It is set to run in both locations until Nov. 15.
